Seeing Ourselves in Those Confronted by Jesus: An Adult Lenten Study

Discover the importance of those who were around Jesus. Learn about groups from Jesus’ time. The focus will be about how Jesus related to each group. Then, be challenged to consider who in the twenty-first- century church is like the members of these groups.

Participants will be emailed a handout to read before each session. Contact Scott McKinney. mckinney@hws.edu

Copies will also be in the church office.

Meeting Sunday morning at 9:15-10:15. Zoom information is on weekly email for Sunday worship.

February 28     The Pharisees

March 7           The Sadducees

March 14         The Essenes

March 21         The Zealots, looking at how their message and motives often clashed with Jesus’ message of peace. Also look at the fine line that exists in the church today between being zealous for making change in the church and practicing the peaceful resistance that was the predominant way Jesus sought to make changes in his world.

March 28         Jesus’ disciples, noting their imperfections, their diversity, and the radical calls they received to leave behind everything to follow Jesus. Then consider what it means to live as a disciple of Jesus today.

April 4              A focus on the role of the women and other marginal people who followed Jesus and consider implications for service and leadership of all people in the church today.
