Welcome from Pastor Colin

Thank you for searching and seeking and finding your way to this website. I know people search and seek for a variety of reasons. Some come seeking community, celebration, answers, direction, or comfort. Some come looking for a way to care for others. Some cannot put words to why they have come, but still find themselves here. Whatever brings you here this day, thank you for trusting us with your time.

The Presbyterian Church in Geneva is an active community of faith with a rich history and dynamic future. We are older people and younger ones, lifelong members and brand-new ones, single and married, straight and LGBTQ+. We are committed to compassion, community, and curiosity. We strive to pursue wisdom as we follow the path of Jesus. We worship, serve, wonder, and delight in times shared in fellowship. We are as imperfect as people are, and we are working towards growth in our love and witness. At our best we are passionate, progressive, and purposeful. You are invited to join in the journey in whatever ways stir your spirit.

On this site you will find information about who we are, what we do, ways to get connected, opportunities to serve and learn, and links to previous services and celebrations.

Please feel free to reach out as you choose, and we will count it as a blessing to continue the conversation.

Choir Rehearsal

We will be rehearsing and singing in masks.  While this is not the easiest or most enjoyable way to sing, it is doable and safest.  To be safe and have the opportunity to sing again together and to lead again in worship will make it all worthwhile.

“Inspired” intro to the Bible with Pastor Colin

Image of closed bible

In this 8-week study we will (re)introduce ourselves to the amazing, wonderful, wacky, troubling, mysterious and glorious gift of the Bible. This will not be your traditional Bible study. Rather it will be a journey together guided by the following book:

Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again – by Rachel Held Evans

“If the Bible isn’t a science book or an instruction manual, then what is it? What do people mean when they say the Bible is inspired? When Rachel Held Evans found herself asking these questions, she began a quest to better understand what the Bible is and how it is meant to be read. What she discovered changed her, and it will change you too.

Drawing on the best in recent scholarship and using her well-honed literary expertise, Evans examines some of our favorite Bible stories and possible interpretations, retelling them through memoir, original poetry, short stories, soliloquies, and even a short screenplay. Undaunted by the Bible’s most difficult passages, Evans wrestles through the process of doubting, imagining, and debating Scripture’s mysteries. The Bible, she discovers, is not a static work but is a living, breathing, captivating, and confounding book that is able to equip us to join God’s loving and redemptive work in the world.”

Tuesdays 6:00-7:00 pm via ZOOM, Oct 5-Nov 23

All are welcome

Sunday mornings: South Parlor 9:15. We will start the year with a favorite video series with author Amy-Jill Levine. Interpreting the Old Testament.  Join us as we explore the cultural and religious context of some of the Bible’s most treasured passages. “As Professor Levine observes: “The Old Testament is endlessly fascinating because it offers everything to explore… tragedy, comedy, and farce; … despair and hope.”

Then we will move on to Walter Brueggemann’s book Delivered out of Empire, also on the book of Exodus. The book is available in the church office.

Sunday School

Our theme is to explore what discipleship means by following Jesus’ words, his examples, his teachings, and his love. Children will make connections with what they already can do and how they already love in their daily lives with how they can be followers of Jesus.

Self Help Sewing

SELF-HELP SEWING CLASSES
WEDNESDAYS, 9:00 am to 11:15 am

Sewing Machine

Since the church is planning on reopening for meetings and outside groups, the Self-Help Sewing classes will be resuming in September.  We are looking for help with leadership of this outreach effort, as well as new participants that want to improve their sewing skills.

If you’ve never attended one of these classes, but have an interest in sewing, please join us on Wednesday mornings in the Fellowship Hall starting September 15, 2021 at 9:00 am.  This group of women and men work on their own sewing projects, with the assistance of experienced teachers.  Some of the completed projects have included quilts, wall-hangings, articles of clothing, curtains, and table-runners.  Sewing machines are available to use during class times.  Participants also volunteer to bring a snack for our times together.

The fall class session will begin September 15 and run for 10 weeks (ending November 17).  The tentative spring class session will begin February 16, 2022 and run for 11 weeks (ending April 27).

If you have any questions, please contact the church office or Beth Reiners (315-789-3761 or breiners@rochester.rr.com).

Summer Worship Service

Dear Members and Friends of The Presbyterian Church in Geneva.

We are pleased to share with you the news that as of 6/30/2021 Session has voted to change the requirements for worship attendance. This decision was made in light of changing recommendations from both the state and the CDC, and a deep commitment to continue to offer the opportunity for all people to participate in worship regardless of their vaccination status and/or desire to continue to participate in social distancing and the wearing of masks.

Beginning Sunday, July 4, 2021.

    • No reservations are required to attend worship
    • There is no masking requirement for individuals who have been vaccinated
    • Congregational singing will resume as part of the worship experience
    • There will be both general seating and options for socially distanced seating
    • There will be ONE WORSHIP SERVICE held in the Sanctuary at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday. This service will continue to be livestreamed to the church’s YouTube channel
    • There will be an option to utilize a sticker/band system to indicate individual’s comfort levels with contact or distancing
    • Communion will be offered using individual pre-packaged elements

We recognize that there is no perfect system to meet the needs of each individual, and we are confident that this new model provides a good way to include the great majority of our community in the opportunity for worship. We are also glad to be able to continue to offer the livestream option going forward for all who can benefit from that connection.

Our thanks go out: to the Covid Task Force for their diligence, labor, and wisdom, to the Staff for navigating all that changes the pandemic required, and to you for your resilience, patience, and continued participation in the life of this faith community. We will see you in church! Thanks be to God.

Rev. Colin Pritchard & the Session of The Presbyterian Church in Geneva.

Sermon on the Mount: A Beginners Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven

Sermon on the Mount Graphic
Sermon on the Mount: A Beginners Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven by Amy-Jill Levine will be the focus of the next series in Adult Forum.

“Amy-Jill Levine’s book is an essential guide to Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount. Levine invites us to hear the Jewishness of Jesus’s words, understand them in light of the world to which he spoke them, that we might better understand how these words speak to us today. This is a terrific book!” Adam Hamilton

“Levine has a rare talent for blending scholarship with human experience and seasoning the mix with her own peppery brand of good humor.” Barbara Brown Taylor.

We will discuss one chapter each week over the course of 7 – 8 weeks. Books are available in the church office. There is also one audio copy on CD available.

Adult Forum continues to meet each Sunday morning from 9:15 to 10:15 by Zoom. Look for the Zoom information at the bottom of your invitation to worship email each week. All are welcome!

Beginning January 10th

Peace, Justice, Joy, and Salvation: Adult Ed Advent Study

The Adult Advent study this year considers not the gifts we give at Christmas, but rather, the gifts we receive.  We will consider familiar texts through the lens of gifts what God longs to give us and deeply desires for us to receive into our lives: peace, justice, joy, and salvation. These gifts are nothing short of transformative. We will do this through short readings, Bible study, reflection, and prayer.

This will be a Zoom meeting on Sunday mornings from 9:15 – 10:15, beginning December 6.

An email with the Zoom address will be sent each week along with the worship Zoom and found on the church website.  This can also be done as a self-study.

Please contact adulted@pcgny.org if you want to take part either by Zoom or as a self-study, so that weekly readings can be sent to you.

“God sends the Church to work for justice in the world: exercising its power for the common good; dealing honestly in personal and public spheres; seeking dignity and freedom for all people…” — Book of Order, W-5.0304

One of the three tenets of the Matthew 25 initiative is the dismantling of systemic racism. Systemic racism refers to the system of structures, procedures and/or processes that disadvantage a specific race. According to the NAACP, it refers to the rules, practices and customs once rooted in law with residual effects that reverberate throughout society. Systemic racism creates disparities in many “success indicators” such as wealth, the criminal justice system, employment, housing, health care, politics, and education.

For many of us, our response to this charge is undoubtedly “what can we do?” We understand that change is needed, but we are not sure where to start. Author Layla F. Saad says the better question to ask ourselves is “How have you managed not to know?”  Why haven’t we asked these questions before and how has our privilege prevented us from seeing these inequities before? In her book, Me and White Supremacy, Saad challenges readers to do the work of dismantling systemic racism by first understanding their connection to the history that perpetuates it.

Adult Ed will be using this critical text in our Fall session to help us do the necessary and vital work that can ultimately lead to improving race relations. Included are historical and cultural contexts, moving stories and anecdotes, definitions, and examples, giving us the language to understand racism, and to dismantle our own biases. It will help us to:

  • Understand Anti-blackness, racial stereotypes, and cultural appropriation
  • Change the way that we view and respond to race
  • Demonstrate how to continue the work to create social change

Set up as a 28-day reflection study, we will use our Sunday forum to discuss the previous 7 days of work. Discussion will continue to occur via ZOOM at this time.  If you would like to join us, please email Adulted@pcgny.org so we can send you an invitation and information on obtaining a copy of the book. All are welcome!!!

Legacy and Major Gifts

Church_Foundation

“A Heart for the Community”

BACKGROUND

In 2008 The Presbyterian Church in Geneva, endeavoring to strengthen its financial base, entered upon a capital campaign.  This campaign has been very successful.   Furthermore, the Session is committed to planning for the future Mission of the church and its financial needs.

Presently, the Congregation’s annual giving is about 60 percent of the revenue needed for the annual budget.  The remaining 40 percent is comprised of income and appreciation of the endowment.   When needed (as in 2008). principal from the endowment is used.  This is a risky financing and cannot be sustained.

From time to time, however, major gifts and bequests are made to the church.  For instance, when Mary Lienk passed, it was her wish that funds she left to the church be used for local mission.  Her thoughtful planning and generosity have funded our Parish Nurse Program and the Village Links/Teen Mom Program.

Recently, the family of Pastor Emeritus Richard Hart initiated an endowment supporting the church Mission honoring Dick and Elizabeth Hart.  The family and the Session are in process of choosing the mission program or service that will be supported.

The Foundation Committee has been asked by the Session to develop a program to encourage the Congregation to consider legacy gifts to the church.  These are bequests or major gifts.   Often they are a part of a will and therefore reflect one’s preferences and become known at the time the will is processed.  The major gifts usually are four figures or greater and may be received at any time.

The legacy gifts make a substancial difference in the life of a church and community.   In many churches, they are the primary source of giving over time—averaging 80 per cent of the revenues.

PURPOSE OF THE LEGACY PROGRAM

By the end of 2014, we hope to have 100 commitments to remember and support the Church in bequests and major gifts.

A commitment means signing a Survey of Interest in the Legacy Program: “I/we have made, or intend to make, provisions for the Presbyterian Church in Geneva in our bequests or major gifts.”

The information you provide – whether detailed or not – will be held in confidence.  Members of the committee would be pleased to answer any questions, hear about your specific interests or provide further information.

For your information, some of the reasons current members plan to include the church in their legacies follow.

Questions and additional information are available from the Foundation Committee – Bob Eberle, Judy Luce, Rick Luce, Beth Reiners, co-chairs Ruth Benedict and Jerry Rose, and Pastor Deb.

O U R  L E G A C I E S

Fritz and Marge AudeOur churches have been of continuing importance in our lives. Schools are important for a number of years and life altering in those years; one’s church can be life altering over an even more extended period.  Therefore, we think it is important that we not only pledge to our church on an annual increasing basis, but that we use our wills to support an ongoing presence in our community so others in future years may also know God’s action and support in their lives. – Fritz and Marje Aude

EdandElfrediaFrickA few times a year I have had the chance to ask my fellow parishioners to donate to worthwhile charities in the USA and around the world.  The money helps to show God’s love.  These assets you leave to the Presbyterian Church in Geneva will be used to continue spreading the word of God, and care of our church home.  I can’t imagine Geneva without our church.  This is one way to keep it going.  Why would I leave assets to the church?  Because I should.   – Elfredia Frick

To me, a church is a community of Christians working together to accomplish God’s wishes in this world.  I want to be a part of that effort.  While I’m here that means contributions of time, talent and money.  When I’ve move on, my time and talent will be used up, but it will still be possible for me to help with money from my estate.  I want to continue to be a part of what I think is meaningful work in The Presbyterian Church in Geneva and in the larger community.  – Ed Frick

Beth NewellI am so thankful to be a part of our church because, as our vision statement says, “With Jesus Christ as our model and the Holy Spirit as inspiration, we boldly live our faith in God as disciples, serving each other, this church, our community and the world.”  What enables us to claim this vision and work toward it?  It is our committed congregation, our inspired pastoral and lay leadership, our dedicated staff, and . . . generous financial contributions from current and past members.  The mission of our church would not be possible without the generosity of members who have remembered the church in their will.   Did you know that over one quarter of our annual budget is funded through our endowment?  I have included the church in my will because I want the members of the Presbyterian Church in Geneva to continue to boldly live their faith In God long after I’m gone.   – Beth Newell

BarbHuebnerAs a member of the Budget and Finance Committee I learned what happens when a member passes away and we lose their pledge.  Some leave money to special programs and others leave it to the endowment fund.  All this is good but it doesn’t help the operating budget of the Church.  After much thought, I have decided on a different kind of gift.  I have designated an amount of money to go to The Presbyterian Church in Geneva.  This money is to be divided in ten equal parts.  For the next ten years it will go to the Stewardship Campaign.  On the eleventh year, the interest it has accumulated will also go the Campaign.  It is my hope that this will help with the everyday expenses of the Church. – Barb Huebner

          Adult Education: Bring-Your-Own-Brunch!

The Adult Education Forum will be having a special virtual meeting THIS SUNDAY, APRIL 5, 2020 at its regular time (9:15 AM) on ZOOM.   Since the current situation required us to postpone our annual Palm Sunday Brunch, we are encouraging those that attend to bring their favorite brunch food to the “virtual” table while we check-in with our fellow members. Michele Ross will lead a short cooking demo, sharing her family’s Norwegian pancake recipe. Feel free to cook along with her, using her recipe, or one of your own!  Members are encouraged to bring their favorite brunch recipe to share, or simply show up with their Sunday coffee or tea and enjoy the conversation.  A phone number is also available for those who wish to join but are unable to video chat. Please plan to join starting at 9 AM so we are ready to start promptly at 9:15 AM.

Please RSVP to Michele Ross at  AdultEdPCGNY@gmail.com to receive the Zoom invite, as space is limited.

We worship God through music, prayer and Word, celebrating the gifts of the Spirit, nurturing our faith, and challenging our complacency. (Mission Statement)

The following are some ways that individuals of all ages may be active participants in worship services.

          • Children’s Time – A special time to share a message of God’s love to the children of the congregation
          • Lighting of Advent Wreath – Readings and prayers for the four Sunday’s of Advent
          • Lenten Candles – Meditation and prayer to extinguish the candles during the six weeks of Lent
          • Ushers (Arranged through Deacons)

January 26 Matthew 25 Focus 1: Building Congregational Vitality by challenging people and congregations to deepen their faith and get actively and joyfully engaged with their community and the world.

February 2 Matthew 25 Focus 2: Dismantling Structural Racism by advocating and acting to break down the systems, practices and thinking that underlie discrimination, bias, prejudice and oppression of people of color.

February 9 Congregational Table Talks in Fellowship Hall
Preparation for new Pastor search. What characteristics and leadership skills are desired in a new pastor?

Feb 16 Matthew 25 Focus 3: Eradicating Systemic Poverty by working to change laws, policies, plans and structures in our society that perpetuate economic exploitation of people who are poor – How we are doing it with Family Promise

February 23 Presbytery Leader Susan Orr will discuss the past and upcoming Presbyterian Peace Mosaic to Israel and Palestine.

Matthew 25:31–46 calls all of us to actively engage in the world around us, so our faith comes alive and we wake up to new possibilities. We recognize Christ’s urgent call to be a church of action, where God’s love, justice and mercy shine forth and are contagious.

          About the Matthew 25 mark

The circular shape represents unity and equality. Like God, a circle has no beginning and no end, and it symbolizes our continuing effort to help one another. The shape also suggests a globe that points to our engagement with the world.

The three interlocking figures represent the equality of all people without gender or race bias. They have their arms around each other, symbolizing friendship, protection and service.

The number three suggests the three focus areas of congregational vitality, structural racism and systematic poverty, as well as the Trinity.

          October 27 through November 24th

          A video discussion series

”With wisdom, wit, and theological depth Barbara Cawthorne Crafton explores the perennial topic of forgiveness from the perspective of gift rather than duty. Along the way, she exposes patterns of resistance and popular understandings that undermine our ability to receive and share the gift with others. Her informal and accessible style, together with the questions and responses of those taking part in the video recorded sessions, open the way for groups to expand the exploration with their own insights and reflections. This study is both timely and urgently needed in a world in which judgment again and again trumps forgiveness, and Christ’s work of reconciliation is held at bay.

What does our faith find in new scholarly understanding? As scripture is the most influential piece of literature ever written, this book is a source of constant wonder, inspiration, and intrigue. We continue the video series with Biblical scholar and engaging speaker Amy-Jill Levine, who relates the cultural and religious context of some of the Bible’s most treasured passages. As Professor Levine observes: “The Old Testament is endlessly fascinating because it offers everything to explore… tragedy, comedy, and farce; miracles and sometimes heavenly silence; answers that satisfy and answers that may not; destruction and rebuilding; despair and hope.”

Sept. 15 Isaac         . The accounts of Abraham’s son Isaac and daughter-in-law Rebecca from Genesis 21-24.

Sept. 22 The Jacob Saga. Genesis 25.

Sept. 29 Folklore Analysis and Type Scenes. This will help us understand common Biblical plot lines or “type scenes’ that reveal narrative art and teach about community heroes and values.

          The Kerygma Curriculum
If the Book of Acts were merely a newspaper-style account of the actions of a few persons at the beginning of Christianity, there might not be much value in studying Acts. But Acts is something quite different quite special, quite unique in the Scriptures. Acts is Luke’s extended description of the nature and purpose of the Christian church in all times and among all peoples. If we desire to know what the church is for, where its power and direction come from, and how to be the church today, Acts is the book to study!

There are those who feel that membership in the church is not necessary for the Christian life; that one can be a Christian without the community. Luke will vigorously challenge this thinking. Here is a place where your own thinking about the church and your role in it may be brought into a new perspective. Luke’s doctrine of the church is as vital for the church of the twenty-first century as it was for the first.
Step into the past with Luke and with God and find your future.

          The Friday Evening Study
Everyone is invited to the Lenten Bible Study. Dinner is provided by the class participants and provides a dinner fellowship experience throughout Lent. The dinner time provides an opportunity to hear about the weekly experiences of those with whom the study will be done. The Kerygma curriculum offers a broad experience for study of the Bible. Whether through acting out a parable, creating a poem to express an experience or discussing the historical aspect of the biblical passages, the study is interactive and creative. We learn by doing and a resource book is provided to assist in understanding the materials.

Add the Lenten Bible Study to your calendar. Talk to Diana Capron about getting a Resource Book for the study. And join us for seven weeks of fellowship and learning.

          Ensuring our Future Appeal Discussion

As you have heard, The Presbyterian Church in Geneva is taking a series of actions to ensure our financial sustainability into the future. Our success in this venture will require contributions of time, talents, and finances from each one of us. Our church is blessed with members and friends who have many gifts, and we ask you to prayerfully consider how you personally will be able to contribute. Because you are likely to have questions about our situation and the way forward, we will be holding informal gatherings in the south parlor after church on June 9 and 16, and on Monday evening June 17 at 7:00 pm. If you would prefer a more private conversation, please contact Rick Bley (315-521-2005), Walt Gage (315-789-3397), or Beth Newell (315-789-4665).

          Adult Education

In January 2019, Adult Education kicked off the year with an exploration of the parables that challenged us to revisit these teachings in their historical context. With thoughtful discussion, we examined how those lessons continue to be relevant in our lives today. As we plan the rest of our 2019 programming, we hope that you will add your voice to these engaging conversations! Check out our bulletin board throughout the year for more information on weekly topics and perennial favorites, such as our Lenten series, “Let’s Talk” summer programming, and special Advent topics. Better yet- drop in at 9:15am on Sunday and see what we’re all about! If you have suggestions for 2019 discussion topics or would like to get more involved, please contact Michele Ross at mmb47@cornell.edu.

          THE GOSPEL OF LUKE
          Lenten Bible Study
          February and March 2019
          Friday Evenings 6:00pm to 8:00pm

The Gospel of Luke is one of the foundational books of the Bible.  Luke is filled with stories of Jesus’ teaching and life including the richness of the Gospel teachings.  As we finish our study of the themes of this Gospel, we will begin to incorporate the teachings of this text into our lives and our faith traditions.  Please join us on Friday evenings in February and March as we complete our study of this important Gospel.

The Lenten Study will begin on February 15, at 6pm in the Fellowship Hall.  We will share a meal of soup, bread, and fruit at 6pm followed by the discussion of Luke from 7pm to 8pm.

During Lent last year, we completed lessons 1-7 in the Kerygma Study Book “Good News For All: The Gospel Of Luke”.  We will begin our study with a review of the material studied in 2018 and then begin our 2019 study on Lesson 8.  Our final session will be on April 5.

Please join us as we complete our study of this exciting Gospel.  It is a wonderful evening shared with friends and an opportunity to learn what the Bible says to us in our daily lives.

(If you will need a study book, “Good News for All: The Gospel of Luke”, please contact Diana Capron as soon as possible.)

Church members contribute time and talents as Sunday School teachers

Choir and Friends of the Presbyterian Church

Love Your Neighbor – For Everyone Born, a Place at the Table, will explore the strong multi-cultural tradition of loving the neighbor, even the ones who seem most different, in song, Bell Choir music, instrumental music, and words.

          Mission Is Our Mission

The Presbyterian Church in Geneva uses time, talent, and treasure for social justice and community improvement.  Through direct investments in over 20 community charities, special collections for mission efforts at home and abroad, and the SERRV shop providing international products produced in a way to improve economic conditions in communities around the world, we believe a standard 10% commitment isn’t enough to reflect the whole of our hearts. In 2016, we devoted over 30% of our general budget to mission.

In addition to these cash contributions and social mission efforts, our church is open to community groups for use for meetings and programs.  In any given year at least 30 community groups, from the American Red Cross to Zonta Club make use of the many gathering spaces.  The Presbyterian Women, Deacons, and other church members also give freely of their time and energy to community outreach and social justice efforts.

We study and teach the Gospel to prepare for discipleship, enabling each of us – wherever we are in life’s journey – to grow in faith.

The purpose of the committee is to provide a meaningful opportunity for adults to gather to explore and strengthen our Christian faith through study and discussion of the Bible, and issues and concepts related to living a Christian life in our congregation, our denomination, our community, our nation and our world.

The committee’s main responsibility is planning and presenting the Sunday morning Adult Education program that meets from 9:15 – 10:15 during the Sunday School calendar. It meets once a month.

The committee is also responsible for managing the Church Library found in the North Parlor.

Memorial Garden Habitat Conditions and Planting Design

The plantings in the garden were mostly installed by Ti Siebert and Master Gardener Rita Reissig, with some help from garden designer Sabrina Siebert. Lakeview Lawn and Landscape provided assistance with the first of several rounds of soil amendment.

Volunteer gardeners would be greatly appreciated! Please contact Ti Siebert or Rita Reissig (contact information is in the “Time and Talent” bulletin at the church) for more details.

          Site Conditions

The garden receives a few hours of direct sunlight in the morning and in the afternoon, during some times of year. Most of this seems to be concentrated in the southeastern part of the garden. It also receives a lot of reflected light during other parts of the day.Direct Light ExposureLight 1

The soil was mostly clay, although it did at least drain pretty well after a rain.In the original site condition, all of the rainwater collected in the southeast corner of the courtyard. The new hardscape turned a considerable proportion of the site into impermeable surface, so we might expect to have some standing water, occasionally.

There was all manner of debris buried in the soil as well.

We were able to dig up the clay soil to about a foot deep, and mix it with topsoil, along with buckwheat hull mulch and peat moss, to lighten the texture, but still allow plant roots a more gradual transition to the clayey soil below.
Even during the construction phase, water was draining well, so, especially after adding our amendments and creating appropriate mounds and swales, we should hopefully be able to accommodate plants that require “well-drained soil”.

Clayey soil broken up with a spading fork

          Amended and Rototilled soil.

This ended up being merely the first round of amendments; a pipe drainage issue later necessitated a much deeper dig, after which the soil needed to be amended all over again, in the southeastern area.

person in hole 1person in hole 2big pile of dirtThe paths and patios pitch slightly east and south. The soil is raised a bit higher in beds on the north side, to encourage water to run across the paths to the south, while a shallow swale guides water towards some slight depressions near the fountain, where we’ve planted Sweetspire (Itea virginica) and Turtlehead “Hot Lips” (Chelone lyonii), which can deal with some inundation. Since all of the vines I was interested in using require well-drained soil, we made sure that the soil level around the trellises and the arbor is a bit higher.

          “WePay” on the CHURCH’s WEBSITE

Many members of the congregation like to pay weekly or monthly with cash or a check.  Weekly envelopes are available on request.

Do you normally pay monthly bills either through a keystroke on your computer or through automatic transfers from your account?  Would you be interested in paying your church pledge the same way?  Several members already contribute this way.  If you would like to pay electronically, the Church can easily accommodate you. Your monthly, quarterly or annual pledge may be transferred through an ACH/EFT electronic funds transfer.  This may be set up either as an automatic transfer on a specific day of the month, or at a time chosen by you when you are making other payments through your online banking.  Please contact Alan Schenck for more information and to obtain a bank form.

Our newest option for contributions is now available on the church’s website.   There  is a donation page, which will allow anyone to make a contribution to the church.  There are options for the type of donation (pledge, special offering, memorial, etc.), the amount, and comments.  This is available through WePay, a secure service that accepts your donation and provides the church with the payment and needed information.  Folks may use either a WePay account, a bank account or a credit card for a transaction.  This is kept confidential, as are all contributions.  If you choose to use the website for a contribution, there is a processing fee that will be charged to the church.  There is also an option for the donor to cover those fees and allow the church to receive the full amount of your contribution.

If you have any questions, please contact Alan Schenck  (789-1343 or schenck@rochester.rr.com) for more information

Existing Site Conditions at the Project’s Beginning

The image below is what the courtyard looked like before the project started: covered in gravel, with a simple path from the steps on the east side to a ramp emerging from the ambulatory door.

Courtyard features & measurements, at the start of the project

View to the east, before the project started…

View to the West, before the project started…

The slab on the west end was crumbling.

Features to be replaced: crumbling slab and inappropriately-sized ramp

As you can see in the photo above, the existing ramp was longer than needed to meet grade, but without room for a level landing pad, and the pathway intersected the sloped side of the ramp.

          Ground Plane Features

          Improved Accessibility

We improved accessibility by shortening the ramp from the ambulatory door and adding a new landing pad, as well as adding new steps on the west end, a rectangular patio and universally accessible paths throughout the courtyard.

Shortened ramp abutting new brick and paver landing pad, which is traversed by the curving western memorial brick path

Lakeview Lawn and Landscape, Inc., of Canandaigua, was subcontracted to do the intricate work on the ground plane. This included installation of the semielliptical patio, the rectangular memorial brick patio and new steps, the curving western pathway and ramp landing pad, and the eastern pathway.

View of new features on the west side of the courtyard: memorial brick path, landing pad, rectangular memorial brick patio, and steps

          Patterned Semielliptical Patio

The stained glass windows of the sanctuary’s north wall, which doubles as the south wall of the courtyard, provided inspiration to Sage Gerling and Sabrina Siebert for the design of the main patio, as well as the curving path.

The partial circle from the window translates to more of a partial ellipse in the patio, while the thick outline is represented by a curved seating wall that is also a columbarium.

          Memorial Bricks

In the past, the names of deceased church members have been engraved on plaques and displayed on the wall in the small entryway north of the Fellowship Hall.

Memorial plaques in small entryway north of the Fellowship Hall

The names of members who pass away in 2012 and beyond will be engraved on the dark reddish memorial bricks that will replace blank bricks in the rectangular memorial brick patio on the west end of the garden, or in the paths on either the east or west sides of the garden, using money from the memorial fund. Drennen Memorials is engraving memorial bricks for us. Those who wish to honor and memorialize passed members may contribute $100 to have their loved one’s name engraved on a memorial brick. There are 370 whole memorial bricks available throughout the courtyard memorial garden for engraving.

          Site Furniture

The columbaria to house the urns of our loved ones are the most crucial elements of the site furniture, of course, acting both as focal points and, in the case of the short, curved wall, as a bench. Please visit the Information about the Columbaria page for more details about them.

Three trellises and an arbor provide space for shade-tolerant twining vines to climb, adding greenery in the vertical dimension, and framing the view from the western entrance, beyond the memorial brick patio.

          Arbor

Dave Fitzgerald, our general contractor, along with his crew from Seneca Building Co., designed and built this huge, sturdy arbor for us.

          Trellises

Sabrina and Ti Siebert custom designed the trellises to reflect the gothic arches and diamond patterns in the windows, while incorporating the scrollwork from the cast iron railing at the eastern steps.

The trellis design uses many elements of the stained glass windows for inspiration, including the paired gothic arches within a larger arch.

The starburst at the apex of an arch and the diamond pattern below were also used.

          through railing
The scrollwork on the cast iron railing of the eastern steps inspired the scrollwork at the top of the trellises.

Tom Batz of Xtremetalworks did a fabulous job of fabricating the trellises from stainless steel, which was then powder coated in black to provide protection from the elements and to better coordinate with the cast iron railing, as shown above.

          Fountain

A historic baptismal font that had previously been used in our church had been purchased, but has generously been donated back to the church by Dr. David Herd. The font was refurbished by Drennen Memorials, and has been turned into a fountain, to provide soothing sounds in the garden: masking the noise of traffic, creating a meditative atmosphere, and encouraging a prayerful state of mind.

          Lighting

At this time, relatively few functions are held in the evening in the church. The lights from the Ambulatory, when turned on, provide a great deal of illumination to the semi-elliptical patio. A light above the rectangular patio was restored to full function (although that is not shown in the following photos). Nevertheless, in anticipation of potential future nighttime use of the Memorial Garden, we opted to add spotlights to highlight the three trellises, the fountain, and each side of the arbor.  To ensure the safety of any nighttime visitors, we also added lighting for the pathways. A new switch inside the ambulatory door controls all of the deck lights in the columbarium stanchions, the path light, and spotlights. Seneca Building Co. and Peck Electric installed the lighting.

          Site Context:

The project was initiated by the Memorials and History Committee to better memorialize our members. It adds natural beauty to a previously unimproved area, provides an appropriate setting for services and committals, and with its two columbaria, provides members with interment at our church.

The memorial garden features greenery, a walk through arbor, a fountain created from a historical baptismal font from our church, and a patio and trellises patterned after our sanctuary’s stained glass windows. The names of members who pass away in 2012 and beyond will be engraved on memorial bricks in the walkways and rectangular patio, using money from the Memorial Fund.

With the support of the Session, the Memorials and History Committee has provided $30,000 in current funds to the $80,000 project. Additional funding to complete the project will come from the sale of niches and memorial bricks, and as people give gifts to the Memorials Fund in memory of loved ones and friends. It is also hoped that members will make donations specifically to support the creation of this lovely space.

There are several ways we can support the memorial garden. For those wishing to be interred in a columbarium, niches will be available for individuals, couples, or family use. Individuals who are not church members may be included. Those who wish to honor and memorialize passed members may contribute $100 to have their loved one’s name engraved on a memorial brick. For those whose future plans are complete elsewhere, but who feel the garden is a wonderful addition, donations would be greatly appreciated in lessening the financial impact to the future Memorials Fund. Donations of volunteer gardening time would also be gladly accepted.

May our legacy of generosity through all our projects, including the memorial garden, make a real difference in the future of The Presbyterian Church in Geneva.

The Memorials and History Committee, comprised of Tom Burrall, Jerry Rose, Bob Eberle, Beth Reiners, and Ellyn Colquhoun, are eager to help all who want to know more. Sabrina Siebert would also be happy to answer questions. Ti Siebert are in charge of gardening. If you are interested in volunteering as a gardener, please contact them. There is a contact form at the bottom of this page.

Memorial Garden – Information about the columbaria

A columbarium (plural: “columbaria” or “columbariums” are both acceptable) is a multi-unit structure that houses urns containing cremated human remains (also known as “cremains”). A niche refers to the individual units in a columbarium. A niche typically contains one or more urns. “Inurnment” refers to putting a person’s ashes into a vessel, but is sometimes also used to refer to the action of placing an urn into a niche or another resting place. “Interment” has traditionally meant putting a body or cremains into the earth, but is also sometimes used to refer to the placement of an urn into a niche in a structure above ground.

            Stainless Steel Niches

For our columbaria, there are 60 niches in the straight wall, and 16 niches in the curved seating wall. When you sign a niche agreement and pay the niche fee or a deposit, you will receive a niche map like the one below, with the unavailable niches marked. You may choose from the remaining niches, or if no specific niche is chosen, the lowest available niche number will be assigned.

We purchased columbarium wall inserts from Architarium. The niches are made of 100% stainless steel, a waterproof material that is welded to form strong seams impervious to water. Stainless steel is extremely durable and highly resistant to the affects of the environment. The design of the columbarium niches and frame incorporates multiple moisture prevention and dissipation features. As one example, the interior access panel has a built-in niche seal. Minimal maintenance is needed: the columbarium may be cleaned off using a water hose. The maintenance of the garden and columbaria is the church’s responsibility.

Columbarium wall inserts, niche dimensions, & urns that will fit…

The niches are joined together via a frame into a preassembled section that can be inserted into a masonry wall. The straight columbarium has four preassembled sections, while the curved seat wall columbarium has three preassembled sections and an additional single niche.

X-ray model image showing how the stainless steel inserts fit into each columbarium. (This was from an earlier model, which is why the number of inserts is different.)

Neighboring niches do not share any common walls; each niche is a self-contained, discrete unit.

The face plates of the niches are 12” x 12”. However, the interior dimensions of each niche in both the straight and curved columbaria are 10 ¾” H x 11 ¼” W x 11 1/8” D. A variety of different shapes and sizes of urns may fit into a niche. Some urn dimensions will allow two urns to fit into the same niche.

Fitting Two Urns into One Niche:

If you wish to fit two urns into a niche, you would likely be safe in choosing two rectangular prisms with the following maximum dimensions:

            height: 10 1/2″
            width: 5 1/2″
            depth: 11″

If you prefer round urns, then the maximum dimensions would be:

            height: 10 1/2″
            diameter: 7 3/4″

Please see the images below for some examples. (Click on an image to enlarge it.) Note that all face plates and niche doors are absent in these model examples, so these are not views we would ever see in reality; only one face plate and niche door would be removed to place an urn in a single niche.

Face Plate, Niche Door, and Security

Each niche secures its urns with two covers: an exterior granite face plate and an interior stainless steel niche door (also referred to as an “access panel”). Only one niche is uncovered with the removal of a face plate during an inurnment. The exterior face place is attached with a hidden proprietary mechanism, and is removed with a tool solely in possession of the church. No hardware is visible from the exterior. The interior niche door is attached with tamper-resistant hardware for additional protection of cremated ashes. Access to a niche may be arranged during church office hours.

Your purchase will include the initial lettering on the 12″ x 12″ lightweight granite face plate. You may have this done at any time. Any changes or corrections in the future will be paid for by you or your heirs.

Engraved face plate – sample from Architarium; ours will be different in terms of color and layout – see details below

The faceplate inscription will include the name(s), birth year and death year. Names will include both uppercase and lowercase letters. A surname used as a heading may be composed entirely of uppercase letters. The size of letters and uniformity of style will be determined by the engraver. The font used, like the ones shown above and below, will be a simple one without serifs. You may arrange names and dates to your liking, or use one of the examples below:

Maiden names, full middle names, and different last names are permissible. However, the length of the name may necessitate tighter condensation of text on the name lines.

Below is a sample of the granite we have chosen, which pulls in the reddish-orange colors of both the columbarium bricks and the darker memorial bricks, as well as the browns of the pavers. Since the granite is nearly uniformly dark, the engraved names and dates will be lightened, as in the sample above from Architarium, to stand out against the background.

After the engraved face plate is returned to the church, the blank face plate covering the niche will be removed, along with the attached niche door. The engraved face plate and niche door will be put into place after the urn is inserted. The church office will arrange for the placement of the urn in the niche informally or following the funeral, memorial, or commital service as per your wishes. Arrangements for formal committal services are to be made between the Pastor and the family.

The face plate shown here is not engraved, as this is from Architarium’s advertising video; in our case, though, the new face plate would already have been engraved.

The lovely granite capstones for our niches were provided and expertly installed by MCM Natural Stone, of Rochester, NY. The colors in this “Ivory Fantasy” granite coordinate beautifully with our site: the salmon recalls the reddish-orange hue of the masonry, the browns and grays match the patio pavers and the stones in the Sanctuary wall, the darkest accents harmonize with the Dakota Mahogany face plates, and the ivory itself corresponds to the limestone of the steps and the concrete window sills.
