Please join these adult education opportunities hosted by Pastor Colin. You can come to any one or all of them. Each session will include watching the video talk together and engaging in conversation guided by Pastor Colin. Each session will be one hour long and there is no need to prepare in advance. Just come with an open heart and willing spirit.

The TED Talks will be offered every other Thursday evening at 7:00 beginning April 15.  You can sign up for this opportunity by contacting the church office at 315-789-1343 or email us at info@pcgny.org

The First Evangelist

According to the Gospel of John the very first person to see the resurrected Christ was Mary in the garden. She became the first evangelist telling the miracle of the Good News. Jesus instructs her to go and tell the disciples what she has heard and seen, and she does so. Mary’s Easter work was to speak of resurrection and beauty to a stressed and distressed people who have seen the world gone wrong.

Recent Scam Text Messages

Recently we have been made aware of a scam text message being sent to some members of the PCG church community supposedly on behalf of a previous staff member. This text is asking for gift cards to be purchased.  If you receive an unsolicited email or text message requesting that you send money by purchasing gift cards, it is most probably a scam. Please know that no staff member will reach out to you in this way to request donations.

Our Identity, Mission & Vision Statements

IDENTITY STATEMENT

We are a community called by God to love and serve all people through a mission of bold action, radical hospitality, inclusivity, and stewardship of all creation.

VISION STATEMENT

With Jesus Christ as our model and the Holy Spirit as inspiration, we boldly live our faith in God as disciples, serving each other, this church, our community, and all people, while working to bring God’s justice and peace to our world.

MISSION STATEMENT

1. We welcome all – no matter what age, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, economic situation, educational background, or religious background – extending the hospitality of Christ by comforting and helping those in need and celebrating together the joys of life.

2. We worship God through music, prayer and Word, celebrating the gifts of the Spirit, nurturing our faith, and challenging our complacency.

3. We study and teach broadly in order to understand and interpret the Gospel to prepare for discipleship, enabling each of us – wherever we are in life’s journey – to grow in faith.

4. We work for justice, peace and the well-being of the Earth and all its peoples.

5. We commit to being generous stewards with our gifts – time, talents, resources – and our lives.

One Great Hour of Sharing
Palm Sunday Auction
March 28, 2021

The Interpretation & Stewardship Committee is planning on “reinventing” the OGHS Palm Sunday Auction using an on-line website.  The auction will include donated items for bid (like in the past), using a “silent auction” process.  We plan on using 32Auctions, an on-line auction site that has been used by other local organizations with great success.  An email will be sent to members listing the available items and the steps to take to bid on the items.  You will need to set up an account with 32Auctions to bid at the auction.  Payment and pickup of items will occur at The Presbyterian Church.  Bidding will begin on March 20 and end on Palm Sunday, March 28.  For those who do not wish to take part in the auction, donations to OGHS will be gratefully accepted.

Missing Pancakes

Missing Pancakes

This morning I’ve been made aware of a deep loss in our community. There are no pancakes today. The tradition of Shrove Tuesday dinner at PCG will not happen today because the pandemic has changed yet another thing. I like pancakes. I want to feast with you all. This could have been fun and full and fabulous. But not this year.

Hello Church!

Hello Church!

I am so pleased to be able to write you this first newsletter article in anticipation of joining you as your pastor on February 1st. Thank you for extending to me your trust and inviting me to join in the next chapter of life, love, service, witness and worship here at The Presbyterian Church in Geneva. Looking forward, I want to both share with you some information and offer you an invitation.

The invitation is this: please help me get to know you. Due to the ongoing restrictions required by the Covid-19 pandemic many of the “normal” ways we would have to encounter one another are not possible right now. So, we have a chance to be creative and find ways to connect in new ways. I will be reaching out and working with the Session, Deacons, and staff to find forums and possibilities. And I will need your help. Please reach out with your ideas, invitations, stories and hopes. I will do my best to honor them. Thank you for your patience and generosity as we continue to navigate the stormy seas.

The information is this: this month we will begin the journey of Lent. It is so good to know we are walking together in celebration of our eternal and abiding hope. We will begin by offering a virtual Ash Wednesday service on February 17th (details coming soon). This will be followed by a Lent worship series on “Practicing Faith”. In advance of Palm Sunday and Easter we will focus on the gifts of prayer, learning the biblical story, sharing joy, generosity, and acts of service.

There is much more to say and share, but for now I pray this will suffice. Thank you. Bless you. It is good to be with you.

Pastor Colin

Sermon on the Mount: A Beginners Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven

Sermon on the Mount Graphic
Sermon on the Mount: A Beginners Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven by Amy-Jill Levine will be the focus of the next series in Adult Forum.

“Amy-Jill Levine’s book is an essential guide to Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount. Levine invites us to hear the Jewishness of Jesus’s words, understand them in light of the world to which he spoke them, that we might better understand how these words speak to us today. This is a terrific book!” Adam Hamilton

“Levine has a rare talent for blending scholarship with human experience and seasoning the mix with her own peppery brand of good humor.” Barbara Brown Taylor.

We will discuss one chapter each week over the course of 7 – 8 weeks. Books are available in the church office. There is also one audio copy on CD available.

Adult Forum continues to meet each Sunday morning from 9:15 to 10:15 by Zoom. Look for the Zoom information at the bottom of your invitation to worship email each week. All are welcome!

Beginning January 10th

Our Christmas Eve Service this year will be very unique – via YouTube. Our Temporary Supply Pastor John Milne has worked with Eleanor Stearns on presenting Lessons and Carols. The Service is available through our Website, our Facebook page, and an E-News Blast. You can choose what time to worship with your family. We are trying to make everything easy and meaningful for everyone. We know that we will all be missing our in-person worship, but the Worship Committee, Session, and Staff feel that we need to be safe in our own homes this year.

Peace, Justice, Joy, and Salvation: Adult Ed Advent Study

The Adult Advent study this year considers not the gifts we give at Christmas, but rather, the gifts we receive.  We will consider familiar texts through the lens of gifts what God longs to give us and deeply desires for us to receive into our lives: peace, justice, joy, and salvation. These gifts are nothing short of transformative. We will do this through short readings, Bible study, reflection, and prayer.

This will be a Zoom meeting on Sunday mornings from 9:15 – 10:15, beginning December 6.

An email with the Zoom address will be sent each week along with the worship Zoom and found on the church website.  This can also be done as a self-study.

Please contact adulted@pcgny.org if you want to take part either by Zoom or as a self-study, so that weekly readings can be sent to you.

PNC Update – November 24, 2020

November 24, 2020

Dear Members and Friends,

Your Pastor Nominating committee writes to share the very happy result of our search for a new pastor for The Presbyterian Church in Geneva. Our work began in the spring, and as of this writing, your PNC has prayed, read, talked, reflected and met 32 times, for many, many hours of careful deliberation and discernment. We have grown very close while Zooming, texting, emailing and listening carefully to each other and to God. We have talked with and interviewed pastoral candidates from far and wide.

Our candidate, Rev. Colin Pritchard, led our worship this Sunday, November 22, after which, in a separate meeting on Zoom, the PNC introduced the candidate to the congregation and presented the Terms of Call. Congregants had the opportunity to ask questions and hear from the candidate.

The Pastoral Nominating Committee (PNC) has met via Zoom over two dozen times in the last four months. Immediately after Session and the Committee on Ministry approved our congregation’s Ministry Information Form (MIF) in August, the document was uploaded to PC(USA)’s computer system, which matches us with prospective candidates. An ad was also placed in The Presbyterian Outlook. The committee has received several self referrals and computer matches from PCUSA. We continue to review Personal Information Forms (PIFs) and conduct interviews. Please keep in mind that PNC Committee members cannot disclose any information about prospective candidates or interviews. Thank you for your prayers!

Retirement Tribute to Pastor Deb from Lisa Gage

Retirement Tribute to Pastor Deb
from Lisa Gage

The following tribute to Pastor Deb was shared by Lisa Gage at the September Presbytery Meeting on Tuesday, September 22, 2020.

Proverbs 27:19 states, “As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart.” Pastor Deb genuinely practices what she preaches. Her life’s work, her actions, her leadership, her unwavering faith all reflect her heart and her brilliant mind. And like the Apostle Paul, she “speaks the truth in love.”
In her last newsletter as pastor of The Presbyterian Church in Geneva she wrote about her first installation 31 years ago. The presiding minister spoke on the key verse in the liberating story of Queen Esther (which, by the way, Pastor Deb preached about last week). He said: “You have been called to this ministry ‘For such a time as this’.” There’s no doubt in my mind that God called The Reverend Dr. Deborah Lind to The Presbyterian Church in Geneva at a challenging time almost 8 years ago– a time of transition. And, our congregation is eternally grateful to God for bringing her into our lives. We’re incredibly fortunate that she answered the call a 1,000 miles from her home in the Twin Cities.

I understand that parishioners expect all clergy to visit those who are ill, to offer counseling to those in need, to provide comfort to those who are grieving, to answer critical phone calls 24-7, respond promptly to every email and text from committee chairs, sermon critics, and so on and so on. Those tasks, I suppose, are part of the job. One could certainly accomplish those tasks as one’s perfunctory duty. Pastor Deb, however, uses her time and her many talents, going above and beyond what’s expected. For example, she didn’t just periodically stop by nursing homes and assisted living facilities to occasionally visit shut-in members. She arranged to have regularly scheduled services at those facilities and welcomed patients and visitors of every denomination. Not only did she provide a meaningful worship service; she played the piano, lead everyone in song with her beautiful soprano professional-quality voice and shared communion with all who gathered. Month after month, year after year, the smiles on the elderly residents’ faces made it abundantly clear that they appreciated that she brought the Word of God to them and brighten their days. In preparation for her retirement, she trained deacons and elders to serve communion in pairs or small groups, so that the important ministry of providing communion to shut-ins can continue.

Her sermons are always inspiring, filled with interesting facts, personal reflections and inevitably some humor. She cracks herself up and we all enjoy her wit. Since March I’ve been helping to produce our services for Zoom and more recently YouTube. There have been weeks that I’ve heard her sermon six, seven even eight times before we all listen to the service on Sunday, yet she still manages to capture my attention. I’m not the only one who is constantly impressed with her preaching; in fact, several retired Presbyterian pastors and a Methodist minister have opted to become part of our church family. While her sermons are thought-provoking and always meaningful, her children’s messages have become somewhat legendary. We never know what to expect. I teach Sunday school and assist with the children’s choir, so I hear the kids talking about what they have learned and they absolutely adore Pastor Deb. She’s like an Energizer Bunny. She keeps up with kids of all ages and even chaperoned two recent trips to Purdue for triennium. If Covid-19 hadn’t forced the Peacemakers’ trip to the Holy Land in March to be postponed to 2021, she had planned to make that trek as well.

As you know, Deb took on many extra responsibilities in Geneva Presbytery, so I’m sure you won’t be surprised when I tell you that she immersed herself in our community right from the start. She impressively rejuvenated the interfaith council, which was practically non-existent. She’s been actively involved in organizing ecumenical services since shortly after she arrived in the Finger Lakes area. Over the last seven and a half years, she has organized and hosted the ecumenical Lenten breakfast services, served on the board of the MLK Scholarship Committee, joined Rotary –and the list goes on. Not surprisingly she has developed more friendships and working relationships with more people than many life-long Geneva residents have.

In a typical month, our church opens its doors to about 3 dozen community groups (scout troops, Family Promise, AA and Al-non, Geneva Reads, the MLK committee, WIC, Sacred Arts classes, sewing classes, yoga and exercise groups, Red Cross blood drives) and every person who walks through the door feels welcome. As my mother says, Deb’s the “hostess with most-est”. Despite her incredibly busy schedule and seemingly endless number of meetings, her door is always open for anyone who needs her. One thing you may not know about Pastor Deb is that she has a Super Power: It’s impossible to say no to her! Like her smile, her enthusiasm is contagious.

These are extraordinarily challenging times locally, for the United States and the world. To quote Pastor Deb: We “are called to speak up, step up and share our faith.” She has taught us well that “For such a time as this” we are called. Our children, youth, and adults as well have benefited from having Pastor Deb as a remarkable role model.

Winnie the Pooh told his friends, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” Winnie the Pooh was rather insightful. This is difficult because you are so loved! Now, as the story which is your life opens to its next chapter, May the God
of Grace richly bless and watch over you. Deb, on behalf of all who have been blessed enough to have you as our pastor, I say to you: “May God bless you and keep you, may God’s light guide your future and grant you peace.” You truly are a blessing. Thank you for all that you do and for all that you are.

Lisa Gage

“For Such a Time as This”

Pastor Deb’s Final News Letter Article

“For Such a Time as This”    (The Book of Esther 4: 14)

At my first installation, the presiding minister spoke on the key verse in the liberating story of Queen Esther. You have been called to this ministry “For such a time as this”.  I believe that God definitely called me to The Presbyterian Church in Geneva as well as each church in my thirty-one years of ministry.  And, I am grateful to God and all of you.

Thank you for welcoming me into your lives and your hearts!  I will miss you.  As much as I long to be closer to my growing family, this will be a major change.  I will hold you in my hearts and prayers as we go bravely into the future.  This month of sermons and celebrations will be focused on God’s steadfast love and guidance.

Thank you for listening to my sermons each week and giving me the respect of a teaching elder as a woman and as an outsider. I’ve been shifting during these seven and a half years from saying, “You” to “Us”. I am a Genevan and New Yorker for another month.  And, I’ve enjoyed immersing myself in this community as well as Seneca Lake.  I pray that your next pastor will be as delighted and blessed.

These are trying times for the country and this world.  I believe you and I are called to speak up, step up and share our faith.  “For such a time as this” we are called.

May God bless you and keep you, may God’s light guide your future and grant you peace.

Pastor Deb

“God sends the Church to work for justice in the world: exercising its power for the common good; dealing honestly in personal and public spheres; seeking dignity and freedom for all people…” — Book of Order, W-5.0304

One of the three tenets of the Matthew 25 initiative is the dismantling of systemic racism. Systemic racism refers to the system of structures, procedures and/or processes that disadvantage a specific race. According to the NAACP, it refers to the rules, practices and customs once rooted in law with residual effects that reverberate throughout society. Systemic racism creates disparities in many “success indicators” such as wealth, the criminal justice system, employment, housing, health care, politics, and education.

For many of us, our response to this charge is undoubtedly “what can we do?” We understand that change is needed, but we are not sure where to start. Author Layla F. Saad says the better question to ask ourselves is “How have you managed not to know?”  Why haven’t we asked these questions before and how has our privilege prevented us from seeing these inequities before? In her book, Me and White Supremacy, Saad challenges readers to do the work of dismantling systemic racism by first understanding their connection to the history that perpetuates it.

Adult Ed will be using this critical text in our Fall session to help us do the necessary and vital work that can ultimately lead to improving race relations. Included are historical and cultural contexts, moving stories and anecdotes, definitions, and examples, giving us the language to understand racism, and to dismantle our own biases. It will help us to:

  • Understand Anti-blackness, racial stereotypes, and cultural appropriation
  • Change the way that we view and respond to race
  • Demonstrate how to continue the work to create social change

Set up as a 28-day reflection study, we will use our Sunday forum to discuss the previous 7 days of work. Discussion will continue to occur via ZOOM at this time.  If you would like to join us, please email Adulted@pcgny.org so we can send you an invitation and information on obtaining a copy of the book. According to the Church Leadership Connection’s resource for PNCs, On Calling a Pastor, “prospective pastors will use the form to help them discern whether God is calling them to serve our church”. The MIF has been uploaded to the computer system, which will match us with prospective candidates. As we begin to receive the first batch Personal Information Forms (PIFs), we are preparing for interviews. If you’d like to peruse the MIF, click on the link below, Thank you for your prayers!

Community Lunch Program

The Community Lunch Program of Geneva is held at The First United Methodist Church and provides a nutritious meal to people who are hungry, raises awareness about hunger, and empowers the community to respond to this need.

BACKGROUND

In 2008 The Presbyterian Church in Geneva, endeavoring to strengthen its financial base, entered upon a capital campaign.  This campaign has been very successful.   Furthermore, the Session is committed to planning for the future Mission of the church and its financial needs.

Presently, the Congregation’s annual giving is about 60 percent of the revenue needed for the annual budget.  The remaining 40 percent is comprised of income and appreciation of the endowment.   When needed (as in 2008). principal from the endowment is used.  This is a risky financing and cannot be sustained.

From time to time, however, major gifts and bequests are made to the church.  For instance, when Mary Lienk passed, it was her wish that funds she left to the church be used for local mission.  Her thoughtful planning and generosity have funded our Parish Nurse Program and the Village Links/Teen Mom Program.

Recently, the family of Pastor Emeritus Richard Hart initiated an endowment supporting the church Mission honoring Dick and Elizabeth Hart.  The family and the Session are in process of choosing the mission program or service that will be supported.

The Foundation Committee has been asked by the Session to develop a program to encourage the Congregation to consider legacy gifts to the church.  These are bequests or major gifts.   Often they are a part of a will and therefore reflect one’s preferences and become known at the time the will is processed.  The major gifts usually are four figures or greater and may be received at any time.

The legacy gifts make a substancial difference in the life of a church and community.   In many churches, they are the primary source of giving over time—averaging 80 per cent of the revenues.

PURPOSE OF THE LEGACY PROGRAM

By the end of 2014, we hope to have 100 commitments to remember and support the Church in bequests and major gifts.

A commitment means signing a Survey of Interest in the Legacy Program: “I/we have made, or intend to make, provisions for the Presbyterian Church in Geneva in our bequests or major gifts.”

The information you provide – whether detailed or not – will be held in confidence.  Members of the committee would be pleased to answer any questions, hear about your specific interests or provide further information.

For your information, some of the reasons current members plan to include the church in their legacies follow.

Questions and additional information are available from the Foundation Committee – Bob Eberle, Judy Luce, Rick Luce, Beth Reiners, co-chairs Ruth Benedict and Jerry Rose, and Pastor Deb.

O U R  L E G A C I E S

Fritz and Marge AudeOur churches have been of continuing importance in our lives. Schools are important for a number of years and life altering in those years; one’s church can be life altering over an even more extended period.  Therefore, we think it is important that we not only pledge to our church on an annual increasing basis, but that we use our wills to support an ongoing presence in our community so others in future years may also know God’s action and support in their lives. – Fritz and Marje Aude

EdandElfrediaFrickA few times a year I have had the chance to ask my fellow parishioners to donate to worthwhile charities in the USA and around the world.  The money helps to show God’s love.  These assets you leave to the Presbyterian Church in Geneva will be used to continue spreading the word of God, and care of our church home.  I can’t imagine Geneva without our church.  This is one way to keep it going.  Why would I leave assets to the church?  Because I should.   – Elfredia Frick

To me, a church is a community of Christians working together to accomplish God’s wishes in this world.  I want to be a part of that effort.  While I’m here that means contributions of time, talent and money.  When I’ve move on, my time and talent will be used up, but it will still be possible for me to help with money from my estate.  I want to continue to be a part of what I think is meaningful work in The Presbyterian Church in Geneva and in the larger community.  – Ed Frick

Beth NewellI am so thankful to be a part of our church because, as our vision statement says, “With Jesus Christ as our model and the Holy Spirit as inspiration, we boldly live our faith in God as disciples, serving each other, this church, our community and the world.”  What enables us to claim this vision and work toward it?  It is our committed congregation, our inspired pastoral and lay leadership, our dedicated staff, and . . . generous financial contributions from current and past members.  The mission of our church would not be possible without the generosity of members who have remembered the church in their will.   Did you know that over one quarter of our annual budget is funded through our endowment?  I have included the church in my will because I want the members of the Presbyterian Church in Geneva to continue to boldly live their faith In God long after I’m gone.   – Beth Newell

BarbHuebnerAs a member of the Budget and Finance Committee I learned what happens when a member passes away and we lose their pledge.  Some leave money to special programs and others leave it to the endowment fund.  All this is good but it doesn’t help the operating budget of the Church.  After much thought, I have decided on a different kind of gift.  I have designated an amount of money to go to The Presbyterian Church in Geneva.  This money is to be divided in ten equal parts.  For the next ten years it will go to the Stewardship Campaign.  On the eleventh year, the interest it has accumulated will also go the Campaign.  It is my hope that this will help with the everyday expenses of the Church.Barb Huebner

        From the Parish Nurse

        Article from the Parish Nurse

        Dear Church Family,

It has been a glorious week with temperatures in the 70s and no rain, hail, snow, wild wind, etc.  How unusual!!!  People are actually enjoying being outside and (if maintaining proper social distancing) not wearing masks!  I feel badly for folks with respiratory disorders; wearing a mask makes it harder to breath.  If it is really hot out, wearing a mask and being short of breath can cause you problems.  My suggestion to those of you with COPD, asthma, emphysema, or other respiratory problems is to use the mask only in situations where you have to, such as going shopping or being in close contact with others in a group.  If you are outside and it’s hot, stay the mandatory 6 ft. away and drop the mask!!  The chance of getting COVID-19 germs outside is remote.  Anything in the air begins to dissipate immediately, it’s very different from being in a small enclosed space.  Studies have shown that the virus may survive in the air up to 3 hrs.  But the studies were run in a contained environment with minimal airflow.  Also it has been noted that increased humidity and temperature decrease the viability of the virus.

“The Gift of the Holy Spirit: Surviving and Celebrating”

The “I Survived” book series was grandson Luca’s top choice for his eighth birthday. He could hardly contain his enthusiasm as he thanked me.  Who would think that children’s stories about surviving disasters such as shark attacks, tornados and the 9/11 attacks could be so popular?  It is assuring to know that others have made it through crisis like this COVID pandemic.  It’s helpful to hear how others managed.  We have a story to tell. You, no doubt have many survival stories to tell.   The narratives in our scriptures give us many examples of resilience and survival of the People of God.  We, at the PCGNY have a story to tell.  We are living it.  How we are surviving and thriving is an ongoing story.

            What’s Next?

First, what is happening now? Last month, I wrote about our Peacemaking trip to Israel. Of course, it was cancelled. However, the Isaiah scripture is prophetic and relevant to our present reality. Isaiah 42:16-17 16 I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.

I can only speak for myself, but I can imagine how you have traveled along “unfamiliar paths” since our seclusion because of the Covid19 pandemic.

Church services around the country switched from “face to face” to “virtual” worship on March 22. As last minute as it was, we were able to gather via Zoom Sunday morning. The live gathering before was not planned. I was blindly leading along unfamiliar paths. However, people loved seeing other so much that I added time after the 10:30 am worship on March 29. Thank God, many people stepped up to “make places smooth”. Every week the PowerPoint and music improved. God certainly has been guiding us as we reach out to help each other. By Holy Week and Easter the number of people logging on to our virtual communion and worship services reached new highs. Family members and friends of the church from other states were able to connect on the internet and it was a grand reunion and celebration.

What is next? I would hope we will be able to meet face to face in June. Until then, remember we are close a phone call or internet. Social distancing is only “physical distancing with social connections. So far, we’ve become very creative and flexible for the sake of safety and health. There are good lessons and new habits which I hope will continue. All staff and committees of the church are hoping and planning for the future. For instance, Communications and worship committees are considering streaming and recording worship.

We will continue to celebrate the Season of Easter in May with Pentecost on May 31. Scripture lessons focus on the appearance of the Risen Christ in every location on the road and in homes but not in the sanctuary. The Holy Spirit touches everyone like a breath of fresh air and brings peace to everyone.

May this Season of Easter bring you God’s guidance and peace as we continue along the unknown path together.

            Adult Education: Bring-Your-Own-Brunch!

The Adult Education Forum will be having a special virtual meeting THIS SUNDAY, APRIL 5, 2020 at its regular time (9:15 AM) on ZOOM.   Since the current situation required us to postpone our annual Palm Sunday Brunch, we are encouraging those that attend to bring their favorite brunch food to the “virtual” table while we check-in with our fellow members. Michele Ross will lead a short cooking demo, sharing her family’s Norwegian pancake recipe. Feel free to cook along with her, using her recipe, or one of your own!  Members are encouraged to bring their favorite brunch recipe to share, or simply show up with their Sunday coffee or tea and enjoy the conversation.  A phone number is also available for those who wish to join but are unable to video chat. Please plan to join starting at 9 AM so we are ready to start promptly at 9:15 AM.

Please RSVP to Michele Ross at  AdultEdPCGNY@gmail.com to receive the Zoom invite, as space is limited.

Tuesday, March 24 Message from Pastor Deb

            March 24

After our first virtual worship service on Sunday, I received many emails thanking me for giving members a chance to see each other.

Applause to everyone who helped make this first service possible

Applause to everyone who helped make this first service, March 22 possible.  I could not have done this without the late-night efforts of Art Lewis and the tech outreach of Lisa Gage. Many of you didn’t have access to computers so you helped each other out. Thank you.

I missed you all yesterday.  Really! I was lost without the church activities, the children, hearing John Milne preach,  listening to families sing and being together as a faithful community.

Presently, it is thought to have originated in an open air market where a variety of animals are sold for food or to be pets.  The virus supposedly made the jump from infecting animals to humans, and now it is being passed by human to human contact.

            Article from the Parish Nurse

            Dear Church Family,

February is “Healthy Heart Month” in the healthcare world.  What are you doing to keep your heart healthy?  The heart is an organ that you cannot live without.  If it is not in good working order it can severely reduce your quality of life. So, taking a little time to tend to a “heart tune-up” can go a long way in enhancing quality of life as we age.

Feb 16 Matthew 25 Focus 3: Eradicating Systemic Poverty by working to change laws, policies, plans and structures in our society that perpetuate economic exploitation of people who are poor – How we are doing it with Family Promise

February 23 Presbytery Leader Susan Orr will discuss the past and upcoming Presbyterian Peace Mosaic to Israel and Palestine.

Matthew 25:31–46 calls all of us to actively engage in the world around us, so our faith comes alive and we wake up to new possibilities. We recognize Christ’s urgent call to be a church of action, where God’s love, justice and mercy shine forth and are contagious.

            About the Matthew 25 mark

The circular shape represents unity and equality. Like God, a circle has no beginning and no end, and it symbolizes our continuing effort to help one another. The shape also suggests a globe that points to our engagement with the world.

The three interlocking figures represent the equality of all people without gender or race bias. They have their arms around each other, symbolizing friendship, protection and service.

The number three suggests the three focus areas of congregational vitality, structural racism and systematic poverty, as well as the Trinity.

Thanks to the generosity of our congregation and to careful cost-cutting measures, we will be drawing nearly 50% less from investments in 2020 to cover church operating expenses than budgeted for 2019. This is a great step forward!

            October 27 through November 24th

            A video discussion series

”With wisdom, wit, and theological depth Barbara Cawthorne Crafton explores the perennial topic of forgiveness from the perspective of gift rather than duty. Along the way, she exposes patterns of resistance and popular understandings that undermine our ability to receive and share the gift with others. Her informal and accessible style, together with the questions and responses of those taking part in the video recorded sessions, open the way for groups to expand the exploration with their own insights and reflections. This study is both timely and urgently needed in a world in which judgment again and again trumps forgiveness, and Christ’s work of reconciliation is held at bay.

A little over four hundred years ago a little known priest and professor of theology started what he hoped would be a life changing debate within the Catholic Church that would bring about real and needed change in the culture and practice of the Church. Instead, Martin Luther helped start a revolution that became known as the Reformation.

            Dear Church Family,

Many of us are looking at the possibility of loved ones having to be placed in a nursing home or possibly thinking about whether we will need to be placed in one at some point ourselves.  It is an unpleasant thought, but doing some research before we get to that point is helpful.

I seldom “recycle” sermons or newsletter articles.  However, my October 2018 Newsletter article began with the question we are asking this fall, ”What is the Church’s Mission?”  Last year, each Sunday covered a guiding principle from “the Great Ends of the Church” as outlined in the PCUSA Book of Order (see list below).

            Dear Church Family,

My mother-in-law passed away in August. Unfortunately, there was some poor communication between the facility taking care of her and our family, which has left us not feeling very good about the facility.  I plan to take the next few newsletters to give you some information that might help you navigate through certain issues.

            AND THE FALL STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN

For over 220 years the Presbyterian Church has been a presence in Geneva, and that presence has made an importance difference in the lives of members, friends and in the local community. We can’t continue to support our vibrant programs by using the principal of our endowment, as we have done for decades.

What does our faith find in new scholarly understanding? As scripture is the most influential piece of literature ever written, this book is a source of constant wonder, inspiration, and intrigue. We continue the video series with Biblical scholar and engaging speaker Amy-Jill Levine, who relates the cultural and religious context of some of the Bible’s most treasured passages. As Professor Levine observes: “The Old Testament is endlessly fascinating because it offers everything to explore… tragedy, comedy, and farce; miracles and sometimes heavenly silence; answers that satisfy and answers that may not; destruction and rebuilding; despair and hope.”

Sept. 15 Isaac         . The accounts of Abraham’s son Isaac and daughter-in-law Rebecca from Genesis 21-24.

Sept. 22 The Jacob Saga. Genesis 25.

Sept. 29 Folklore Analysis and Type Scenes. This will help us understand common Biblical plot lines or “type scenes’ that reveal narrative art and teach about community heroes and values.

            The Acts of the Apostles

            6pm to 9pm

            The Kerygma Curriculum
If the Book of Acts were merely a newspaper-style account of the actions of a few persons at the beginning of Christianity, there might not be much value in studying Acts. But Acts is something quite different quite special, quite unique in the Scriptures. Acts is Luke’s extended description of the nature and purpose of the Christian church in all times and among all peoples. If we desire to know what the church is for, where its power and direction come from, and how to be the church today, Acts is the book to study!

There are those who feel that membership in the church is not necessary for the Christian life; that one can be a Christian without the community. Luke will vigorously challenge this thinking. Here is a place where your own thinking about the church and your role in it may be brought into a new perspective. Luke’s doctrine of the church is as vital for the church of the twenty-first century as it was for the first.
Step into the past with Luke and with God and find your future.

            The Friday Evening Study
Everyone is invited to the Lenten Bible Study. Dinner is provided by the class participants and provides a dinner fellowship experience throughout Lent. The dinner time provides an opportunity to hear about the weekly experiences of those with whom the study will be done. The Kerygma curriculum offers a broad experience for study of the Bible. Whether through acting out a parable, creating a poem to express an experience or discussing the historical aspect of the biblical passages, the study is interactive and creative. We learn by doing and a resource book is provided to assist in understanding the materials.

Add the Lenten Bible Study to your calendar. Talk to Diana Capron about getting a Resource Book for the study. And join us for seven weeks of fellowship and learning.

            Ensuring our Future Appeal Discussion

As you have heard, The Presbyterian Church in Geneva is taking a series of actions to ensure our financial sustainability into the future. Our success in this venture will require contributions of time, talents, and finances from each one of us. Our church is blessed with members and friends who have many gifts, and we ask you to prayerfully consider how you personally will be able to contribute. Because you are likely to have questions about our situation and the way forward, we will be holding informal gatherings in the south parlor after church on June 9 and 16, and on Monday evening June 17 at 7:00 pm. If you would prefer a more private conversation, please contact Rick Bley (315-521-2005), Walt Gage (315-789-3397), or Beth Newell (315-789-4665).
