A Season of Peace

“Peace to those who are near and those who are far away.”
Ephesians 2: 14-17

September 2018 A Season of Peace

For the first time, we will be recognizing the month of September as a “Season of Peace”.  It’s been on our Presbyterian calendar for several years. The Presbyterian Mission & Global Witness website (www.presbyterianmission.org) has a plethora of peace-full opportunities; five weeks of reflections (Path of Peace)Peace Dove Multi-color Poster, ninety peace cards for table conversations and action. We will be utilizing some of this material and urge you to do the same. This year’s season of peacemaking concludes with a Peace & Global Witness offering on World Communion Sunday. I’m looking forward to all that leads up to October 7th including a peacemaking speaker from Greece who will lead worship and adult education on Sunday, September 23. In September there will be other peace-making activities, including an intergenerational creative art project of coloring this peace poster (to the right). The poster has the word “Peace” written in five languages – Hebrew, Arabic, Spanish, Korean and English.

Social Hour is a chance to catch up after a busy summer. Along that same line, if you missed the 220th anniversary, you may watch the PowerPoint and two dramatic presentations of the Rev. Jedediah Chapman (Jay Hannagan) and Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell (Eleanor Stearns).  The tours of the church from the “Basement to the Belfry” and “Sacred Arts” were very popular.  We will announce opportunities to tour our newly renovated church and learn about our rich history.  “Sacred Arts” brochures, historical information about Dr. Blackwell and this church are available in the office. Also, Rev. Dr. Richard Hart’s fascinating history of “the Presbyterian Presence” is available for a donation of $20.  The collectable Blackwell stamped postcard is available for a minor donation. All proceeds will be used to purchase a fitting tombstone for Jedediah Chapman in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Something new:  Mid-week prayer, September 19, 6:30 – 7:00 p.m.

Peace be with you, Pastor Deb

220th Anniversary Worship Service

On July 22, 2018, The Presbyterian Church in Geneva celebrated the 220th Anniversary of a Presbyterian presence in Geneva. That presence grew from a small group of Presbyterians led by Jedediah Chapman in 1798 to the present. The anniversary worship service was by the Rev. Deb Lind-Schmitz, Rev. Jim Gerling, Rev. George McIlrath and the Rev. Suzanne Otterbacher.

We would like to thank Neil Sjoblom for taking the pictures of this 220th Anniversary Worship Service.

Pictures in the slide show below will change every 5 seconds.  If you would like to go faster, simply click on the current slide show picture.
